Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani reopened Syria’s embassy in Rabat, May 14, during his first official visit to Morocco, marking a significant step in restoring bilateral relations between the two countries. Shaibani raised the Syrian flag over the embassy building alongside Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, officially resuming diplomatic operations after a suspension that lasted over 12 years.
During a joint press conference, Shaibani described Syrian-Moroccan relations as historic praising what he called Morocco’s humanitarian, political and moral support for the Syrian people over the past 14 years.
He also thanked Moroccan authorities for quickly restoring political relations following the fall of the Assad regime. According to Shaibani, Moroccan officials initiated contact less than a month after the political transition in Syria, emphasizing the importance of renewing diplomatic ties.
Expanding Political and Economic Cooperation
Shaibani said the two sides agreed on a broader framework for cooperation that extends beyond diplomacy and includes economic, educational and commercial partnerships. He noted discussions during the visit included plans to establish a joint business council and increase cooperation in sectors where Morocco has developed successful experience.
Shaibani added that Syrian-Moroccan relations are moving in a positive direction saying both governments are committed to strengthening those ties further. The Syrian foreign minister also said he expects Bourita to visit Damascus in the near future as part of continued diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
Morocco Reaffirms Support for Syria
Bourita said the reopening of Syria’s embassy reflects the return of normal diplomatic relations after over a decade of interruption. He stated Morocco, under the leadership of Muhammad VI, has consistently supported both the Syrian people’s aspirations and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Bourita also pointed to recent political, economic and legal developments in Syria, saying they indicate a transition toward greater stability after years of conflict and instability. He reiterated Morocco’s support for the political transition led by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and expressed backing for measures aimed at rebuilding state institutions despite ongoing regional challenges.
Syria Backs Morocco’s Territorial Integrity
According to the Maghreb Arab Press, Shaibani reaffirmed Syria’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He also voiced support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, describing it as an important step toward a lasting political solution to the regional dispute surrounding Western Sahara.
Morocco previously announced the reopening of its embassy in Damascus in July 2025 under directives from King Muhammad VI, formally restoring diplomatic representation in Syria. The renewed engagement between Syria and Morocco reflects Damascus’ broader effort to strengthen ties with influential Arab states and reestablish its diplomatic presence in the region after years of political isolation.
