Syria and China Launch Cancer Treatment Cell Therapy Partnership

The Syrian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chinese biotechnology company Yitai Biotechnology have signed a framework memorandum of understanding to cooperate in establishing and operating a specialized center for research, innovation and clinical applications in cell therapy in Syria. The signing ceremony took place at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi.

The ministry was represented by Assistant Minister for Scientific and Research Affairs Ghayth Warqouq, while Yitai Biotechnology was represented by its chief technology officer, Muhannad al-Darwish. The agreement marks a new step in scientific cooperation between Syria and China and reflects efforts to strengthen research and medical capabilities through international partnerships.

Developing Research and Clinical Capacity

Under the memorandum, both sides will work together to establish and operate a center dedicated to cell therapy research, innovation and clinical applications. The project will include the preparation of studies and implementation plans, the development of clinical and research infrastructure, and the launch of research programs and clinical trials.

The partnership also seeks to build and train national expertise through the exchange of knowledge and the transfer of advanced biotechnology techniques. According to the agreement, all activities will take place in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and approved health oversight standards. The initiative aims not only to support scientific research but also to create opportunities for Syrian researchers, physicians and academic institutions to engage with emerging biomedical technologies.

Expanding International Cooperation

Halabi described the memorandum as the beginning of a productive partnership and affirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the project. He said the ministry is prepared to provide the necessary facilities and assistance required to implement the programs outlined by the company.

According to Halabi, the agreement represents an important step toward building advanced international scientific partnerships in modern biomedical fields. He added that the project could contribute to developing Syrian research and medical capacities while opening new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

Focus on Cancer Treatment and Diagnostics

Darwish said the center will focus primarily on innovative therapies, with research directed toward developing and applying new treatment methods. He noted that these therapies will be made available to patients in Syria, with a particular focus on treating various forms of cancer.

In addition to therapeutic applications, the center is expected to provide advanced diagnostic and analytical services that are not currently available in Syria. These services include early detection technologies for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as specialized diagnostics related to the immune system.

Yitai Biotechnology specializes in biotechnology and medical diagnostics and develops laboratory analysis equipment and diagnostic testing systems for a range of diseases. The company is headquartered in Nanjing, China. The new partnership reflects a broader effort to expand Syria’s scientific and medical infrastructure while introducing advanced biotechnology research and clinical applications to the country.
