The Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) has expressed deep regret and concern over the decision by the World Food Program (WFP) to suspend its aid programs in northwestern Syria due to funding shortages. The SSG, through its Ministry of Development and Humanitarian Affairs, has strongly criticized the WFP’s decision, emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation in the region and the potential consequences of the aid suspension.

The SSG highlighted several key points in response to the WFP’s decision. Firstly, they emphasized the significant number of camps in northwestern Syria, housing over one and a half million people who rely heavily on humanitarian aid. The suspension of aid programs poses a serious threat of famine to this vulnerable population, which the SSG considers a crime against humanity.

Furthermore, the SSG pointed to the devastating impact of the February earthquake in the region, which left nearly half a million people without homes, jobs, and businesses. They stressed the urgent need for continued support in the face of this catastrophic reality.

The SSG also highlighted the ongoing forced displacement caused by military escalation in the region, with thousands of individuals being displaced to perceived safer areas. And underscored the high population density in the besieged area, coupled with a lack of economic resources and job opportunities, which further emphasizes the critical need for sustained humanitarian aid.

The SSG concluded by firmly rejecting the complete suspension or reduction of WFP’s programs in the region and urged the WFP to uphold its humanitarian and ethical responsibilities. They called for the continuation of aid programs and the development of plans to ensure appropriate alternatives in case of future suspensions of food supplies.

The statement reflects the gravity of the situation in northwestern Syria and the urgent need for sustained humanitarian assistance to prevent further suffering and potential humanitarian crises in the region.
