Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered in Al-Karama Square in downtown Suwayda on Friday morning, just hours before the weekly central demonstration at the site.

The demonstration organizing committee found the remote-detonation bombs openly placed on the stage, typically occupied by journalists and photographers, in what appears to be an attempt to intimidate the protestors, according to Suwayda 24’s Facebook post.

The bombs, connected with wires and batteries, were found before demonstrators gathered in the square. The youth assigned to protect the square removed the bombs using a bullet-proof vest and transported them to the regime forces’ engineering center for disarming, as defusing them required technical expertise.

“We received your message through your explosive bombs,” said Ayman Shaib al-Din, lawyer and supervisor of the demonstration organizing committee. He accused the Syrian regime of attempting to intimidate the protesters. “Nothing will deter us from continuing to achieve political change that saves what remains of Syria and the Syrians. We will remain peaceful, and your bombs will not intimidate us, just as your barrels did not before,” he added, as quoted by Suwayda 24.

Despite the incident, hundreds gathered in Al-Karama Square, chanting for the fall of the regime, political change, the implementation of international resolutions, the release of detainees and the disappeared, and the promotion of freedoms.

Following the demonstration, dozens of protesters moved to the Al-Anqoud roundabout at the northern entrance of Suwayda city, where they carried out a tree-planting campaign. They chanted slogans like “Our revolution is peaceful; it sprouted a revolution of flowers and laurels.”

The tree-planting campaign was a response to circulating news about the regime’s intention to establish a security checkpoint at the northern entrance of the city. While there has been no official clarification, local sources told Suwayda 24 that the preparations were for the establishment of a center to sell fuel at cost price, not a security checkpoint.

Suwayda governorate has maintained its peaceful movement demanding political change and the fall of the regime since August 2023, despite repeated attempts by the regime to thwart the movement. This incident marks another episode in the ongoing struggle between the regime and the residents of Suwayda, who continue to protest peacefully for political change.
