The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has sent a large number of troops to its air base in the countryside of Homs. The arrival of reinforcements being part of Iran’s plan to build its largest military base within Syrian territory.
Sources within the region claim that the Revolutionary Guard brought dozens of pieces of artillery, medium munitions, large quantities of light munitions, and trucks filled with American-made “TOW” guided missiles to the T-4 military airport on Sunday evening.
The weapons had entered from Iraqi territory towards Abu Kamal, east of Deir ez-Zor, to Palmyra in the Homs countryside before being delivered to the airport, which is now a base for Iranian militias. The T-4 Airport in Homs countryside had been transformed into an Iranian military base after the Russian forces withdrew from it several months ago.
Iran is seeking to consolidate its influence in Syria, by controlling the land route that connects Iraq with Lebanon, through Abu Kamal and Homs in Syria, and connects Iraq with Iran. Iran’s ambitions have faced many obstacles as regional and international players have refused to allow it to have a land corridor stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
