Syrian security forces arrested members of an ISIS cell during a joint counterterrorism operation east of Aleppo, authorities said April 16, in a move aimed at curbing a recent uptick in militant activity. The operation, carried out by the Ministry of Interior in coordination with the General Intelligence Service, targeted a group suspected of planning and executing attacks against security personnel.
According to statements released by the ministry the arrests followed intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts. A ministry source told Syria TV the detained cell had been involved in a series of attacks, including assassinations and direct targeting of military and security forces operating in the region.
Weapons Seized During Arrests
Officials said the operation also led to the confiscation of weapons, ammunition and explosive belts believed to have been intended for use in future attacks. Authorities described the materials as part of preparations for ongoing terror activity. In its statement, the Interior Ministry said the seized equipment included ammunition, tactical vests and other military supplies, highlighting what it called the operational readiness of the group.
Investigators are continuing to assess the extent of the cell’s activities and potential links to larger ISIS networks. The arrests mark one of several recent security actions in the Aleppo countryside, where officials say militant cells have attempted to regroup despite ongoing counterterrorism pressure.
Part of Broader Security Campaign
The latest raid follows earlier operations targeting ISIS affiliates in northern Syria. On Feb. 27, security forces in Aleppo province arrested Jassim Ibrahim al-Ahmad, identified by authorities as an ISIS member, in the city of Jarabulus after what officials described as sustained monitoring.
Authorities say such operations form part of an ongoing campaign to dismantle militant networks and prevent attacks threatening civilian safety and state stability. ISIS activity increased in recent months, according to Syrian officials, with attacks often aimed at security forces and infrastructure. The resurgence comes as the government reports progress in restoring control and stability in several regions.
Ongoing Efforts to Contain Threats
Officials emphasized that counterterrorism operations will continue as part of a continued strategy to eliminate armed cells and maintain public security. The Interior Ministry said it remains committed to pursuing individuals involved in what it described as hostile acts against the state.
While the arrests represent a tactical success, analysts note that ISIS cells have historically adapted to pressure by operating in smaller, decentralized units. This has complicated efforts to fully eradicate the group’s presence. However, according to recent global terror index Syria improved from the previous year.
Still, authorities framed the Aleppo operation as a step toward limiting the group’s operational capacity. By targeting leadership structures and supply networks, officials aim to reduce the frequency and scale of attacks. The developments highlight the ongoing security challenges facing Syria even as officials point to gains in stability.
